Why I am Showcasing This Graphics Critique

The graphics critique shows a different form of writing. I engage my critical thinking and I use my knowledge of technical communication principles to write an evaluation of the graphics. This critique shows that I have digested the principles of technical communication. Also, the graphics critique showed me the importance of good graphics in the world of information delivery. This critique expanded my knowledge of communicating information through graphics.

The Skills Shown in the Graphics Critique
Critical Analysis Skills

Firstly, this graphics critique shows my critical analysis skills. I point out each graphic's flaws. For example, Figure 1: Human Resources Diagram’s typeface is unfriendly because it uses all capitals (Tufte 2001). The use of all capitals is harder to read because of the equal height of the letters (Tufte 2001). Font choice is central to accessibility because fonts need to be clear for all readers. Critically evaluating graphics ensures that the reader will understand the graphic's information.

Secondly, this graphics critique shows my formatting skills. For example, Figure 2: Table from Choosing and Keeping Chickens does not adhere to the traditional form of a table (Markel and Selber 2018). I was able to correct this formatting error as evident by my redesign at the end of the document. Using traditional formatting techniques tells the reader what to expect within a graphic.

Lastly, this document shows my knowledge of the application of colour. Figure 3: Bar Chart from Epidemiology of COVID-19 in Ireland, reported on 13th November 2020 has bad colour choices. The similar shades of purple in the ‘number of deaths’ and the ‘7 day moving average’ do not emphasis either factor. The point of colour is to emphasis certain elements of a graphic (Markel and Selber 2018). Different colours would allow the reader to differentiate the information easier. Colour is one of my first considerations in a design project because colour enhances information. Also, some people are colour-blind and thus, the effective use of colour enhances a graphic’s accessibility.

What I Learned by Completing This Graphics Critique

I learned how to write a graphic critique correctly which will be hugely beneficial to my career. Constructive criticism is a vital part of technical writing and instructional design and thus, I am glad that I learned how to formulate criticisms early in my education. Furthermore, I learned the importance of good graphics regarding the circulation of key information. Before this assignment, I felt that graphics were purely aesthetic, but I now know that graphics are vital to the circulation of information.
